Language Strand of the Common Core State Standards

Hi everyone!
I am presenting a workshop Friday in Portland that goes over the common area between the CCSS language standards and what we teach in ESL.

If you are interested in reading an article I wrote about Common Core Standards:  ELLS and the Language Strand, click on over to Really Good Stuff.  I was a monthly columnist for them and September's 2012 post was all about the Language Standard of the Common Core!

Common Core Standards: English Language Learners (ELLs) and the Language Strand

We are off and running with common core as we approach full adoption in the 2013-14 school year. With this in mind, have you checked out the Language Domain of the Common Core English Language Arts (ELA) standards? This great domain elevates the importance of English grammar, conventions, vocabulary in the classroom. It is essential for classroom and ESL teachers to understand this important strand.

As you know, the strands or domains of the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts include:

I Just Barely Made It!

Hi everyone,

During the previous year I noticed that a group of my intermediate speakers of English were struggling with the phrases ‘just barely’.  They were substituting ‘just hardly’ for it.  I put together a one day  ELD lesson and then created this chant to practice continued practice, until they became fluent with the phrase.  I want to share the call back with any of you who might be able to use it.  So here is the little call back chant I wrote to practice the phrase “just barely”.

I Just Barely Made It!

I just got out of bed,

and barely touched my breakfast.

I just grabbed my books

And headed out the door!

WHEW!

I just barely made it.

I just barely made it.

I just barely made it, to school on time!

Happy Teaching,

Ipad app for Action words!

Hello everyone!

Here is a fun iPad app you might be interested in using with your students.

It looks like a fun way to teach Action words. I like that it uses real photos instead of animation and I think students might think it is pretty fun!

Has anyone tried it? If so, give us your thoughts!

Text Features Song!

Hi everyone!
I am continuing on with my last big language unit for the year; a Compare and Contrast unit using vocabulary from Text Features and Graphical Devices (visual information such as: diagrams, timelines, and flowcharts.)

I want to share the song I wrote.  My goal was to use text features and graphical device vocabulary,  as well as, comprehension strategies in the song.  This is what I came up with!

Text features song

Listen to me people
You need to take heed
Text features are
Everywhere you read
They are in
Articles, tests, and texts
They are in passages
What’s up next?

Cross section diagrams
Flowcharts, too!
Maps and tables
Guess what’s new!
Timelines and insects
Graphs for you
Surface diagrams and captions, too!

Text features
Read them first
Text features will give you a burst
(Of knowledge not
 found in the text)
Click here to hear my chant!

I am also using one of my 'Talking in Paragraphs' charts.  This is a great way to have ESL students practice oral presentations using academic language.  The students also practice what their body language should look like as listeners, as well as speakers!

Happy Teaching!

Graphical Devices, Text Features and Nachos!

Hi everyone!
Happy May... I can't believe we are heading into the last weeks of school.  My last big language unit for the year is a Compare and Contrast unit using vocabulary from Text Features and Graphical Devices (visual information such as: diagrams, timelines, and flowcharts.

We are using these graphical devices and text features as our vocabulary that goes with our compare and contrast language.  This is the chart we are using that lists some of the major graphical devices and as we compare different books and texts we are adding their covers to the graphical devices they contain.

On the right side are student drawn examples of other text features we are finding.

I started my unit using the term "graphical devices", as you can see here in this picture of my sentence frames, but I changed the term to 'text features', which is more commonly used and  understood.

I started working on this unit after I read this great article from Reading Rockets titled,

By: Kathryn Roberts, Rebecca Norman, Nell Duke, Paul Morsink, Nicole Martin , et al.

Click here to go to that article.

After I read it, I decided to adapt it to an ESL lesson that would go for several weeks.

I chose Compare and Contrast, as the language function and it fit perfectly.
It was the language function I wanted to end the year with.
From there so many of the details and resources I needed were outlined in the article.

It is turning out well.
I will keep you posted and share a song I
wrote that goes with the unit in my next post
about text features and graphical devices!!
